The market is falling and fast ! Plantings took place in Sept 2010 and harvest is expected to be in May. It is estimated that Chinese farmers planted an extra 20% acreage in Sept. With good rains in the last 4 weeks, yield is expected to  be good. First shipments of new crop should take place in June this year. Expect further weakness ahead of the May new crop. If all turns out to be as Chinese traders are speculating…

Overall activity is slower, mainly due to the tensions in Middle East. Buyers ( Saudi and Dubai traders ) holding back a little. The bottom line is the market is a little weaker today, so bids are being looked seriously at. Beware of Chia seeds mixed into Cardamom Seeds at a rate of 5 – 10%. These seeds look almost the same as cardamom seeds, but are differentiated by being slightly more shiny / smooth. Also beware of Cardamom Seeds…

This is not a good year for dehydrated ginger. The Chinese crop of October 2010 was a “normal” size, but the demand for the fresh ginger for restaurants was so strong, it appears no dehydration was done. So, technically, China for the first time ( I think in many many years ) has no new crop. This means that all exports from China are essentially “old crop” harvested in October 2009.
